What Green Funding Means
Understanding renewable energy and energy efficiency support in Scotland

Green funding in Scotland refers to financial support available to homeowners, landlords, and small businesses seeking to install renewable energy systems or improve energy efficiency. These schemes are designed to reduce carbon emissions, lower energy bills, and support Scotland's transition to net zero.
Support may come in the form of grants, loans, or rebates, depending on the technology being installed and the eligibility criteria met. Programmes can cover solar panels, heat pumps, insulation upgrades, battery storage, and more.
It's important to note that all funding is subject to eligibility and availability. Schemes may have specific criteria related to property type, income level, location, or existing energy systems.
Renewable Energy
Support for solar panels, heat pumps, and battery storage systems to generate and store clean energy.
Home Efficiency
Grants for insulation, glazing, and retrofitting to reduce heat loss and improve comfort.
SME Support
Funding options available for small and medium enterprises looking to reduce operational costs.
Heat Pump Funding
Heat pumps are one of the most supported renewable technologies in Scotland. The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan scheme provides financial assistance for air source and ground source heat pumps, with higher support levels available for rural and island properties.
Eligible households may receive grants to cover a significant portion of installation costs, with additional loan options available. The funding aims to replace fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives, reducing both emissions and long-term energy costs.
Properties must meet minimum insulation standards before a heat pump can be installed, and installations must be carried out by certified installers to qualify for support.

Solar Panel Grants
Solar panel installations in Scotland may qualify for support through various funding streams, particularly for low-income households or those in fuel poverty. While the Feed-in Tariff scheme has closed, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) allows homeowners to earn income from surplus energy exported to the grid.
Some local authorities and housing associations offer targeted solar grants as part of broader energy efficiency programmes. Eligibility often depends on property ownership, household income, and existing Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings.
Modern solar installations include protective measures such as bird deterrents and mesh systems to ensure long-term performance and prevent damage from wildlife.

Insulation & Retrofit Support
Insulation improvements are often the most cost-effective way to reduce energy consumption and improve home comfort. Scotland offers various schemes supporting cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, external wall insulation, and underfloor insulation.
Warmer Homes Scotland and Area Based Schemes provide targeted support for vulnerable households, while the Home Energy Scotland service offers advice and potential grant funding for broader retrofit projects. Support may also extend to draught-proofing, double glazing, and heating system upgrades.
Eligibility criteria typically consider household income, property type, current EPC rating, and whether residents are in receipt of certain benefits. Local authority schemes may have additional geographic requirements.
Subject to eligibility and availability.

Battery Storage & EV Charging
Battery storage systems allow homeowners to store excess renewable energy generated by solar panels or other sources for use during peak times or when generation is low. This maximizes self-consumption and reduces reliance on grid electricity.
While standalone battery grants are less common, some funding schemes include battery storage as part of wider renewable energy installations. Home Energy Scotland may provide support for battery systems when installed alongside eligible renewable technologies.
Eligibility often requires an existing or planned renewable generation system, and installations must meet technical standards to ensure safety and grid compatibility.
Subject to eligibility and availability.

Rural Uplift Options
Properties located in rural and remote areas of Scotland may qualify for enhanced funding levels under certain schemes. The Rural Home Upgrade Grant, for example, provides higher grant amounts for renewable heating systems and energy efficiency measures in off-gas-grid areas.
Island communities may also benefit from additional support through specific programmes targeting fuel poverty and carbon reduction in harder-to-reach locations. These uplifts recognize the higher installation costs and logistical challenges faced in rural Scotland.
Eligibility for rural uplifts typically depends on property location, whether the property is connected to mains gas, and the household's energy efficiency needs. Rural properties replacing oil, LPG, or electric heating systems often receive priority.
